Emotional support animal can become a companion in a difficult battle against psychological disabilities. Unlike a service animal, an ESA letter provides emotional support to people who have been diagnosed with a psychological condition or disability. Emotional support animals are protected under the Air Carrier Access Act and Fair Housing Act so that they can travel and live with their owners.

Emotional support animals are distinguished by their supportive, close and emotional bond with their owners to treat problems of depression, anxiety, and other psychological disabilities. The owners of emotional support animals must be accommodated under the Federal ESA law in two areas: air travel and housing.

Emotional Support Animal Housing Law

• Property-owners are permitted to deny an emotional support animal if accommodating an ESA could impose an undue financial burden or poses a great threat to the safety and health of others.   

Traveling with an Emotional Support Animal

When flying, it is important for you to become familiar with the Air Carrier Access Act (ACAA). Those owners who wants to travel with their ESA and have official letter from a registered mental health professional are allowed to travel with their ESA. The ACAA prevents discrimination of disabled people traveling by air. Under this law, airlines are not permitted to refuse service and charge fees for accommodating people with mental disorders. The airline is not permitted to dog food brands charge a fee in association with an ESA. Based on the ACAA

•  The airline cannot place breed or weight restriction on an ESA. 
•  The airline may ask you to contact at least 48 hours before traveling to make sure that you have submitted all the necessary online forms 
•  Airlines can deny unusual or exotic animals such as spiders, snakes, and rodents.
